ALAS-U is the motivating force which empowers current and aspiring Latino educators by fostering their leadership capacity, amplifying their voices, and positioning them to serve the broader community while cultivating a strong sense of belonging amongst all stakeholders.
Mission
The mission of ALAS-U is to develop and support current and aspiring Latino educators. ALAS-U helps them advance into positions of leadership through mentorship, networking, access, and professional development. We build inclusive networks, elevate community voices, and equip Utah districts and educators with the tools to lead with purpose and cultural awareness.
Goals
- Increase the number of Latino educational leaders at the school, district, and state level.
- Create significant and meaningful opportunities for professional learning by:
- Becoming a respected voice in the community on educational issues;
- Providing professional assistance to community groups, boards of education, and leaders in or related to the field of education, especially in ways that benefit Latino and ELL students;
- Working within existing districts’ infrastructure to promote leadership development, mentoring
opportunities, and networking; and - Planning and executing an annual conference.
- Seek out and honor authentic leader success within the Latino educational community;
- Follow up by advocating on behalf of these leaders;
- Become a state-wide organization that wields influence and earns respect within Utah’s educational community by:
- Communicating the purpose, vision, and mission of the organization,
- Promoting ALAS-U as a voice for the Latino community within the broader community,
- Providing regular updates about key educational issues,
- Working cooperatively with other educational organizations to advocate for quality and equitable education,
- Increasing support from corporate and community sponsors,
- Steadily increasing membership over time, and
- Having an ALAS-U representative serve on the national ALAS board of directors.
